Community Hub and friend invites
These two are unusual: they pay gems and nothing else. No coin dilution, no chance roll on the currency type. Checking the Hub costs nothing and takes seconds, which makes it the highest return per minute of anything on the list.
Gem shards
Nine shards convert into a gem. Shards come from daily quests, the casino, the Calendar of Rewards, watching ads and the periodic Gem Shards Event. Note that ads do pay shards even though they do not pay gems directly, which is the one legitimate reason to keep watching them.
Challenges over Tournaments

The pattern is that the small repeated costs are what actually empty a balance. A player entering one tournament and one challenge a week, saving a streak twice, spends around 38 gems weekly before unlocking anything at all.
A realistic weekly routine
If you want to accumulate rather than tread water, the free sources have to be habits rather than things you remember occasionally:
- Daily. Collect the Calendar of Rewards, check the Community Hub, clear the daily quests. All three pay gems or shards, and all three take under two minutes combined.
- Weekly. Take the Challenge if it lands in a location you have fully equipped. Guaranteed 30 gems for 14.
- Ongoing. Play levels you have not completed before rather than replaying a comfortable one. New levels raise your account XP, and levelling up pays gems while replays do not.
- Occasional. Invite a friend. It is one of only two sources that pays gems and nothing else.
