Cooking Fever Tournaments and Challenges Explained
Tournaments and Challenges are the two competitive modes in Cooking Fever, and they are also the two things a modified build can never touch. Here is exactly how they work, using Nordcurrent’s own published figures rather than the vague summaries most guides offer.
Tournaments: twice a week, one location
Twice a week one location hosts a Tournament. To enter you need account XP level 4 and every piece of cooking equipment and every ingredient in that location already unlocked. That second requirement catches people out far more often than the level does.
Entry is not free. Tapping the golden stars icon costs 20,000 coins and 20 gems every time you enter.
Once inside, you play and complete as many levels as you can before the Tournament ends. The ten players who win the most levels take the leaderboard rewards.
The full reward table
| Place | Coins | Gems |
| 1st | 200,000 | 300 |
| 2nd | 150,000 | 200 |
| 3rd | 100,000 | 150 |
| 4th | 75,000 | 125 |
| 5th | 50,000 | 100 |
| 6th | 35,000 | 75 |
| 7th | 20,000 | 50 |
| 8th | 10,000 | 25 |
| 9th | 5,000 | 20 |
| 10th | 2,500 | 15 |
Read that against the 20 gem entry fee and the economics become clear. Finishing tenth returns 15 gems on a 20 gem stake, so tenth place is a net loss. Ninth barely breaks even. The mode only pays from about eighth upward, and the real money is in the top three.
Lose a level mid Tournament and you get a choice: pay 2 gems to save your streak, or start again from scratch. Your best score stays on the leaderboard either way, so a restart means beating your own number before you climb any higher.
Which locations host them
Tournaments rotate through eight locations only:
- Fast Food Court
- Bakery
- Sports Bar
- Chinese Restaurant
- Pizzeria
- Seafood Bistro
- Sushi Restaurant
- Ice Cream Bar
All eight are early or mid game locations. If you want to compete regularly, fully upgrading those eight is a better investment than spreading the same coins across newer restaurants.
Challenges: once a week, harder, cheaper
Challenges run once a week and are the better value of the two. A location icon on the map turns into a banner reading CHALLENGE when one is live.
| Requirement | Detail |
| Account XP level | 10 |
| Equipment | All unlocked in that location |
| Entry fee | 16,500 coins and 14 gems |
| Task | Complete 15 levels of increased difficulty |
| Prize | 30,000 coins and 30 gems |
That is a guaranteed 30 gems for a 14 gem stake, against a Tournament where only the top eight finishers profit at all. If you are choosing where to spend a limited gem balance, the Challenge is the more reliable return by a distance.
Preparing for a tournament properly
The equipment requirement is where most entries fail before they start. You need every appliance and every ingredient in the host location unlocked, not merely most of them, and the game will not tell you which one is missing until you try to enter.
Because tournaments rotate through the same eight locations, the fix is one off. Pick two or three of the eight, finish their upgrade trees completely, and you will be eligible for a large share of the rotation rather than discovering you are one ingredient short on the morning a tournament opens.
The other preparation is timing. A tournament rewards total levels completed, so it favours whoever sits down for a long uninterrupted run rather than whoever is best at any single level. Entering when you have twenty minutes spare is how people end up ninth.
Three mistakes that cost the most
Entering a location you have not mastered
Eligibility is not readiness. Meeting the equipment requirement means you can enter; it does not mean you can clear levels quickly enough to place. Entry costs 20 gems either way.
Paying to save a streak too early
Saving a streak costs 2 gems each time. Early in a run, when your score is still low, restarting is often cheaper than repeatedly paying to protect a total you were going to beat anyway. Save the gems for when your streak is genuinely worth defending.
Treating tournaments as a currency source
They are a competition with an entry fee, not an income stream. Challenges are the income stream. Confusing the two is the fastest way to drain a gem balance you spent weeks building.
Why a modified build does not help here
This is the part worth understanding before you download anything. Tournament and Challenge results are calculated on Nordcurrent’s servers, not on your phone. A raised local balance pays the entry fee, but the levels you complete are counted server side, and the leaderboard is assembled from what those servers recorded.
So no build unlocks the competitive modes, no build wins them, and any download page claiming otherwise is describing something that cannot work. It is also the reason these modes need a connection while ordinary levels do not, which we cover in the offline guide.

Enter Challenges whenever one appears in a location you have fully equipped: the return is fixed and positive. Treat Tournaments as optional unless you are confident of a top five finish, because below eighth place you are paying gems for the privilege of competing.
And if you are looking at the eight tournament locations wondering which to equip first, the full cost of every restaurant is in our unlock all restaurants guide.
